Building Bridges Project, Science Museum

Building Bridges was an excellent project run by the Science Museum to inspire young people to ask questions of the world around them and raise awareness of the relevance of science to their lives.  It involved a visit by Science Museum staff to Year 7 pupils in various schools, followed by a trip by the students to the Science Museum, where they got to meet a person using science in their work.  For some schools, it meant that they got to listen to me talk about fluid dynamics: what it is, why I do it, why mathematics is important and why it should be important to them.

Most priceless was the look on some of their faces as they perhaps began to realise what mathematics allows you to do.  Hopefully, they left with an inkling that it’s is more than what they learn at school.
